Suicide-related emergency room visits among children have surged as the pandemic and the lockdowns dragged on, according to a public health agency.

Sen. Rand Paul: “More children have died from suicide than from COVID.”

On June 11, the Centers for Disease Control reported: “During Feb. 21–March 20, 2021, mean weekly ER-visit counts for suspected suicide attempts were 50.6% higher among girls aged 12–17 years compared with the same period in 2019.”

An editor at media nonprofit Young Voices addressed his concerns to the U.S. Senate earlier this year.

Brad Polumbo: “We are very surprised by the intensity of the desire to die among children who may be 12 or 13 years old.”

But higher suicide rates are not the only problem.

More children at home due to lockdowns — using all types of social and gaming platforms — means more opportunities for sexual abusers to groom minors.

John Shehan, vice president at the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, told Forbes his organization received 4.2 million reports in April 2020. That’s up 2 million from the previous month and nearly 3 million from April 2019 — a massive increase.
