West Virginia Joe Manchin is crushing Democrats’ hope of passing far-reaching voting rights legislation. On Sunday, Manchin made the rounds of all the news programs and published an op-ed in his state’s newspaper of record, stating in no uncertain terms he would vote against the For the People Act, and he will not vote to weaken the filibuster.

Among other things, the For the People Act would throw out all recently-passed, state-level election reforms, expand felons’ and illegal immigrants’ access to the ballot box and codify no-excuse mail-in voting.

Passage of the act would require two things — Manchin’s support and an end to the filibuster. Joining Manchin in support of the filibuster is Democrat senator Kyrsten Sinema, who, unlike Manchin, supports the For the People Act; but she won’t kill the filibuster to make it happen.

Without the filibuster, Democrats can ram through their agenda unimpeded. Republican senator Ted Cruz says the For the People Act is by the politicians, of the politicians and for the politicians. Cruz warns it will rig elections for years to come.
