ST. LOUIS (ChurchMilitant.com) – Kim Gardner: “It’s about the will of the people.”
St. Louis circuit attorney Kim Gardner is being charged with professional misconduct in her investigation of Missouri’s former governor Eric Greitens. The charges were filed March 1, but were not made public until Tuesday.
While her success in forcing Greitens to resign made headlines in Missouri, it was her prosecution of Mark and Patricia McCloskey that brought Gardner into the national spotlight.
Gardner was removed from prosecuting the McCloskeys after a circuit court judge and an appeals court judge both ruled she used her role in the case to raise money for her 2020 campaign.
Mark McCloskey:
So we have a new special counsel on our case who is completely unrelated to the circuit attorney’s office so it will not directly affect us other than the fact that it’s always encouraging to see that there is some justice in the world and that people who are openly corrupt, like Kim Gardner, finally can get called to justice.
Within days of being notified of the Greitens misconduct charges in March, Gardner launched a campaign of damage control with an appearance on 60 Minutes where she was portrayed as a victim of racism.
Kim Gardner:
I was sent emails that said I should be hung up by a tree by the KKK. … The people of the city of St. Louis overwhelmingly voted me in to do my job to reform a system that we all know is beyond repair and needs to be dismantled and rebuilt.
In 2017, Gardner tried to put pro-life activist John Ryan in jail. Ryan was falsely accused of making a bomb threat at the St. Louis Planned Parenthood.
Gardner put Ryan through a three-day trial. The jury deliberated less than an hour and found him not guilty.
The misconduct charges could cost Gardner her law license and her job. But thanks to Gardner’s charges against Mark and Patricia McCloskey, they too could lose their law licenses and their livelihoods because of the as-yet-unresolved weapons charges brought against them by Gardner.
