This is Part V of a five-part series that recounts one survivor’s experience of homosexual predation and debauchery in religious life. “Elias” is a pseudonym to protect the victim. Read Parts I, IIIII and IV.

The principal culprit in Elias’ story has never faced ecclesiastical, criminal or civil consequences for his abuse. He has thrived in the visible Church and in the secular world.

Father Philip Cutajar recently posted a picture of himself receiving a COVID-19 vaccine, equating reception of the vaccine with Christian discipleship.

“As a parish priest in Mt. Carmel Hospital, today I received the vaccine against COVID-19 with the aim of taking care of my health and the health of others, as … is my duty as a citizen and as a Christian. I urge you to responsibly do the same,” he remarked.

Cutajar currently resides in Floriana, Malta, where he continues with the Franciscans and their work. He gives interviews, talks on the radio and sits on a board of studies.

That board is for a module in Franciscan spirituality offered through the Malta archdiocese’s Pastoral Formation Institute (PFI). One of PFI’s stated goals is “promoting professional formation of pastoral workers for the performance of their ministries and other work.”

Abroad and Back in Malta

Cutajar went to Cuba in 1999 and spent many years there.

He held an official position in a section of the Episcopal department dedicated to “pastoral health” (Salud-Pastoral Penitenciaria) for the Cuba Conference of Catholic Bishops. Church Militant consulted a native Spanish speaker who indicated Cutajar’s title was unclear, not explaining what his job entailed.

In 2007, the Cuban government awarded Cutajar on World AIDS Day for his work with AIDS patients. Cutajar expressed surprise by the award.

In 2017, back in Malta, the Franciscans launched the “Peace and Good Foundation” as a pastoral outreach to migrants and refugees in Malta. Cutajar was instrumental in the founding and was one of the main speakers on opening day, which the Franciscans themed “mental health and spirituality of migrants in Malta.”

Father Philip Cutajar, O.F.M. Cap.

He is highly active as a vowed religious in Malta. He is teaching Franciscan spirituality, honoring saints like Padre Pio and praising Our Lady of Divine Grace on her feast day.

Father Philip Cutajar has never apologized. He has never made amends. He continues unencumbered as a Franciscan.

Cutajar continues unencumbered as a Franciscan.

Elias is still searching for peace.
